Stately townhouse in a gated-off NYC historic district seeks $3.375M

Even among Harlem’s most stately properties, this yellow brick and limestone townhouse stands out as one of an inimitable group of homes that compose a lesser-known Manhattan sub-neighborhood.

Currently on the market for $3.375 million, the five-story townhouse at 215 W. 138th St. belongs to a historic stretch of properties on two gated-off streets officially known as the St. Nicholas Historic District, but more often referred to as Strivers’ Row. And on it, according to Zillow, there are two other homes now for sale and two others for rent — meaning it’s a prime time to grab a home in a low-key corner within the big city grid.

The area’s stately row houses were built by three different elite architecture firms in the late 1800s as part of what was initially known as the King Model Houses looking to appeal to wealthy white buyers — with amenities that originally included shared rear stables, and being enclosed within carriage gates inscribed with a reminder to “walk your horses,” according to Untapped Cities.
