ADUs Are Coming to Town

Have you ever wondered how to get the most out of your property while contributing to a sustainable, community-oriented housing solution? That's where Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, come into play. An ADU is a smaller, independent residential dwelling unit located on the same parcel as a single-family home. They can take many forms, from an apartment over the garage to a tiny house in the backyard, providing much-needed flexibility and living space.

But why should you care about ADUs? The beauty of ADUs lies in their potential to serve our evolving population needs. These units can provide much-needed living space for multi-generational families, a private retreat for a home office, or a separate space for grown children. At the community level, they help to accommodate changing family dynamics and population growth without the need for urban sprawl. They foster intergenerational interactions, contribute to housing affordability, and ultimately promote a more resilient and inclusive community.

Here in West Chester, the Borough has recognized the potential of ADUs and is taking steps to integrate them into our local housing strategy. Mark your calendar for a public hearing on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 6:30pm, to discuss regulations that would create a legal framework for ADUs in West Chester.
