Fireworks launched from the top of a 14-er, it doesn’t get more Colorado than that. As legend has it the original “Frozen Five”, carrying 175 pounds of powder, flares and food made the climb to the summit of Pikes Peak on Dec 31, 1922. After a harrowing ascent they fired a single green flare at 9pm signaling to onlookers in the town of Colorado Springs below that all is well. At midnight, engulfed and obscured by a blizzard, they shot off flares and rockets beginning this uniquely Colorado New Year’s tradition. The annual show has continued, evolved and been carried out by the hearty members of the AdAmAn (pronounced Add A Man) Club for over 100 years.

There are countless ways from around the world to celebrate the beginning of a New Year. Watching a ball drop, eating round fruits, cleaning house, banging bread on your walls and wearing red underwear are just a few. One of my bucket list items is to leave winter behind, soak in some summer and celebrate Réveillon on the beach in Brazil. Celebrants dressed in white for peace and purity enter the sea, jump 7 waves for 7 wishes, send offerings to Lemanja goddess of the sea and dance the night away. Sounds way better than cleaning my house. “Ano novo, vida nova.”

As the end of 2023 approaches, the “Best of” lists start to flow. This Denver foodie was thrilled to see the Hearth Bread from our local Brut0 make an appearance on the The NY Times ‘23 of the Best American Dishes of 2023’ list. “If thou tastest a crust of bread, thou tastest all the stars and all the heavens.” -Robert Browning
