It's been an incredibly busy couple of months for me, and what I love about these newsletters, is that I can be creative, and spend time searching for visually interesting and lighthearted content as well as write from my heart. However, today's commentary is not light hearted and it's long, because it's content that is very pertinent to the lives of film/tv crews, and safety measures that the union I belong to, The International Association of Theater Stage Employees (IATSE) has been fighting for in their struggle to ratify a new work contract. I may lose followers or clients for my biased judgement, but I cannot be dictated by the need to stay silent about issues that affect me, my friends, and co-workers in the film/tv industry just to gain a client. Union members were poised to strike, but a deal was made and many of us are not happy - we want more because we deserve it. While Film Studios reap the benefits of content on screen and streaming, workers behind the scenes are fighting for sustainable benefits, reasonable rest, AND a safe work place. A tragic day last week was when the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, was killed on the New Mexico film set of "Rust". Incidents of continuously unsafe practices, extremely long hours, unpaid wages, and general disregard for the crew's safety have been reported. And GUN SAFETY... totally disregarded, which led to the death of a vibrant up and coming cinematographer, wife, and mother. The same day her camera crew walked off the set to protest for better and safer working conditions, she was killed ...
The question of culpability is always on someone’s mind...who’s fault was it? The inexperienced Armorer who left guns out on an unlocked cart, and who allowed crew members to shoot live ammo? The AD who rushed the scene along so they could stay on schedule, not calling for a safety meeting, taking the gun off the prop cart and calling the gun "cold" but not checking the weapon? What about the producers who knew that the crew was exhausted, that they had not gotten paid in 3 weeks? Or that they had refused to give them local housing, forcing them to drive back and forth to Albuquerque which added 2 hours to their already tiresome 14 hour work day? Or...what about the Production company who claimed they were not aware of any “formal” complaints, even though the union camera crew had walked off that same day, and the AD they put in charge had previously been fired off a job due to his lack of enforcing safety on set? Being the wife of an Propmaster/Armorer makes it even more unfathomable that multiple people on this set disregarded the safety of the crew when weapons were being used. If even one person in the chain of command had thought about the strict safety protocols established, it could have saved a life. Whether you are pro-union or not, this is about lives ... lives that have been shattered, a child is motherless, a husband has lost his life partner, and the film/tv industry has lost a rising star. Also in an effort to help Halyna's family with the financial needs associated with her death, the Cinematographer's Union Local 600 has created a go-fund page here. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Will The Housing Market Cool Off This Fall? Today’s hot housing market is one of the peculiar outcrops of the pandemic. Housing supply was already low before Covid-19, but it was further hampered as lockdowns took place and people began looking for new homes, driven by a host of reasons—from the desire to leave populated cities to better home offices or just fear of missing out.The Federal Reserve’s steps last year to keep the financial markets liquid and to ensure mortgage rates stayed low have continued. But the low mortgage rates pale in comparison to soaring housing prices in the past year.
