Hello October! Hello, pumpkins and hayrides, and of course, we couldn't forget Halloween. During the month that dentists find the most frightening, we check in with a local candy hero, go over some of our favorite places to pick a jack-o-lantern, and suggest a few haunted houses for those who love a good scare! And if you were looking for the perfect cocktail to herald in the fall season, we have one from one of Boston's finest restaurants.

Steps away from the golden Greek Revival dome of the State House and the old African Meeting House lies a rare find: a fully renovated brick townhome that has maintained its New England charm through the centuries. Built at the height of the Gilded Age, 28 Irving Street was envisaged as an affluent urban residence from the start. Step inside the foyer, and a stately marble fireplace promises cozy fire-lit evenings throughout the long winter season. Elsewhere, ornate fireplaces punctuate the rooms with a historical appeal. With an open floor plan, the kitchen overlooks an ample, elegant dining area that dialogues with the home and looks out onto the worn street cobblestones. During the summer, a private deck opens onto a quaint neighborhood courtyard and a privy view of the area’s endearing gardens and bay windows. This 3 bed/2.5 bath, meticulously maintained home has a basement-level laundry room, entertainment room, and additional fireplaces throughout the upper bedrooms and sitting areas.

In Sudbury, there's a beloved store with a little bit of something for everyone. Wine, cheese, unique spirits, cool household goods, and candy are just a few joys you will find at Duck Soup. The store even offers cooking classes and makes swoon-worthy gift baskets. But, when Louise Mawhinney rescued the cherished Sky Bar during Necco's 2018 bankruptcy auction, Duck Soup and Louise were catapulted to candy hero status. The Sky Bar, with its four different creamy centers, is now made at the Sudbury store and sold nationwide. So, with the biggest candy holiday just around the corner, we were thrilled to be able to chat with the Sky Bar savior.
1. We adore Duck Soup. From cool kitchen gadgets to confectionaries to gourmet cheeses, we never leave the store empty-handed. One of our favorite things at Duck Soup is to peruse the unique spirits, wines, and cordials. Is there a liquor pairing you might recommend with the Sky Bar?
LM: Interesting question. We sell coffee beans and make a mix called "Sky Bar Blend." It is reminiscent of the sky bar, and I recommend drinking a cup of it with this childhood candy favorite. Whiskey would also work well, as it would be robust enough to complement the bar without the many flavors of the sky bar overwhelming it. Laird's Applejack comes from one of America's oldest distilleries and would be a fine choice.
2. Some say the Sky Bar comes from heaven with four delectable and different centers. So what made you want to save this treasured candy bar from returning to its eternal maker?
LM: A Duck Soup customer was a huge Sky Bar fan and had us bring them into Duck Soup a few years ago. They are so popular I couldn't believe no existing candy company bought the rights at the NECCO bankruptcy auction. I knew there was a market and bid on it, so I was not expecting to win. But here we are!
3. We understand that candy traditions are important to you. What are your Halloween candy traditions? LM: At Duck Soup, we always have candy that is very high quality, and in fact, we have a wall of candy jars that the local kiddos like to pick and choose from very carefully, making sure they have enough money for their choices. It's very "sweet" (pun intended!) Halloween is one of the candy-based celebrations we love, and we make sure we have a great selection of Halloween candies that you won't find in a drugstore or supermarket. 4. Duck Soup is a small business that supports other small businesses through the products sold in the store, such as Goodnow Farm Chocolates or Pate made by Trois Petits Cochons company in New York; this mission gives us such a warm and cozy feeling. So how do you find all the cool things you put on the shelves?
LM: A lot of the ideas come from our customers themselves. Because we have only one location and don't have a corporate headquarters to answer to, we can pretty much stock anything we want. In fact, we often get asked where the name "Duck Soup" came from. It was suggested by the father-in-law of the founder because "you can put anything into duck soup." He was a chef, so that sounded good to me!
5. As a confectionary aficionado, is there any other type of candy or chocolate you would rush to save?
LM: We currently have our hands full getting Sky Bar production up to capacity, so sadly, we are not in a position to save anything else. However, we would love for you to come and see the Sky Bar being saved! You can watch the chocolate being made through our viewing windows in the retail store, Monday through Thursday at around 3.30. It is the only Necco product still made in Massachusetts, which is a shame, but something we are proud to make happen

Thank you to Louise for taking time out of her busy schedule.

From hayrides to picking the perfect apples, the New England farm is at its best this time of year. Here are a few of our favorite spots and what they offer.
Belkin Family Lookout Farm (South Natick) - Not only can you find your perfect pumpkin, but you'll also find apples, live music, food, and a cold local brewsky. Plus, the kids always love a train ride through the orchards. Tougas Family Farm (Northborough) - Jump onboard a free wagon ride to get a gander at the gorgeous fruits and pumpkins dotted throughout the farm's landscape. Then, when your apple basket is full, stop to nibble on a freshly baked apple cider donut or grab a homemade ice cream a the Tougas Family Kitchen.
Connors Farm (Danvers) - If you enjoy a challenge, head to Connors Farm to try out their corn maze. Then, for a little extra challenge, hit it up on a Friday or Saturday night when you'll only have a flashlight to illuminate your way. - Honeypot Orchard (Stow) - For a picturesque apple-picking session, a massive maze, and an old-school hayride, Honeypot Orchard is the spot for you. Oh, and another bonus? The apple cider never stops flowing at the farm store.
- Smolak Farms (North Andover) - Besides the usual fall farm goodies, we adore Smolak Farm's "experience" packages. From just your regular ol' cider donut and hayride to a full-blown experience with smores, there is something for everyone here.

Boston has a seemingly endless number of restaurants from which to choose. But, when it comes to fine dining, the list shrinks to only a couple of dozen that are tried and true. Ostra is on that list and at the top when it comes to seafood. So, now that everyone has returned to town from summer hiatuses, we thought a fall cocktail from this Back Bay treasure was the perfect way to celebrate everything autumn in our darling little city.
Fall Foliage Cocktail from Ostra This lovely cocktail is served in a champagne flute and perfectly encapsulates the New England autumn vibe. It's already a favorite in the restaurant, and now you can enjoy it at home.

For those of you who need a little help getting into the Halloween spirit, consider heading to one of these haunted happenings if you dare!
Barrett's Haunted Mansion (Abington) - Open from Thursday to Sunday, Barrett's Haunted Mansion is not for the faint of heart. Pair the night with dinner at the Abington Ale House and, for two nights only, experience complete terror at Devil's Night, where physical contact and horrific chaos are part of admission. Yipes!
Witch's Woods (Westford) - During October, the adorable Nashoba Valley Ski area turns into a slopeside of terror. A haunted hayride, a vampire passage, and a horrorwood chamber of chills are just a few frightening attractions to usher you into Halloween. Chamber of Terror (Salem) - Head to the mecca of ghosts and goblins, Salem, to listen to ghost stories told by candlelight. But be forewarned, it is VERY dark, and a zombie or two might just "pop" into the chamber when you least expect them! Fear Town (Seekonk) - If a haunted house doesn't sound scary, what about navigating through haunted woods to get to that haunted house? With something frightening lurking behind every tree and shadow, you'll be running for your car in no time. The Factory of Terror (Fall River) - Did you hear about the 113 factory workers murdered in Fall River? No? Would you like to meet their ghosts and witness the bone-chilling murders? If you have any hesitation, don't worry; it's 100% fiction but also 100% terrifying.
