Bumpy Roads Ahead

Rising and falling trade tensions buffeted the stock market again, and by the time it was over, the major U.S. indexes recorded big gains that nevertheless fell short of offsetting the previous week’s more sizable losses. The NASDAQ surged more than 7% for the week, the S&P 500 added almost 6%, and the Dow climbed about 5%

Brooklyn Market Rebounds

Brooklyn’s residential real estate market continues to evolve, demonstrating resil-ience despite broader market uncertain-ties. As buyers adjust to current mort-gage rates, they’ve begun reentering the market, resulting in 2,358 sales in Q1: a 13.4% YoY increase. Houses maintain their dominance, accounting for 50.9% of the market share, with a notable 16.7% increase in sales compared to last year. Brooklyn saw a 27.5% increase in homes signed YoY. (Full Report)

Fed Says Tariffs Will Push Up Inflation, Unemployment

The New York Federal Reserve said on Friday the Trump administration's current trade policies will accelerate inflation this year, while adding that it's critical for the U.S. central bank to prevent longer-run expectations of price pressures from becoming unmoored. They expect the tariffs to push inflation up to between 3.5% and 4% this year. (Read More)

Mortgage Rates Surge Over 7% as Tariffs Hit Bond Market

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage surged 13 basis points Friday to 7.1% - the highest rate since mid-Feb.

Mortgage rates have been on a roller coaster ride all week, as bond yields spiked higher mid-week when new tariffs on dozens of countries went into effect. Yields dropped when Trump lowered the tariff rate on most countries hours later. Tariffs on Chinese imports, however, currently stand at 145%. (Full Story)
