Dating back to 1819, when Alexander Thompson constructed a modest two-and-a-half-story building, this home served as the residence of Archibald Sommerville, a Scottish settler. In 1852, the property underwent a transformation under the ownership of William B. Howenstine, its second proprietor. The building was expanded to four stories, reflecting the Federal architectural style, and various brownstone additions were incorporated.
