Abiah Palmer was a prominent attorney, NY State Senator, President of the First National Bank of Amenia (nearby Bank of Millbrook building) and Hudson River Hospital President who donated grounds for the nearby cemetery. He would later inherit the house and pass it to his son, Capt Roland Palmer; a Yale graduate and NYC attorney who also practiced law in Paris for many years.
