Senior Engineering Manager

As the Senior Engineering Manager focused on Developer Platforms within the Tech Infra organization, you will be responsible for the strategy and execution for delivering software that improves Observability, Infrastructure as Code, and FinOps across the Compass engineering organization. Your team plays a significant role in defining, proliferating, and maintaining best practices that allow teams to architect and deliver reliable, performant, and efficient services that power Compass's real estate platform. The individual will need to be customer focused (internal engineers) and excel at collaborating with the rest of teams within the organization for alignment.

Responsibilities:

  • Nurture and Develop Talent: Lead a high-performing team by inspiring, mentoring, and guiding managers and engineers to achieve their full potential
  • Foster Growth & Performance: Provide individualized coaching, career support, and performance management to help team members advance their skills and thrive
  • Define Organizational Roadmap: Drive the strategic direction and collaborate on long-term goals for the tech organization, serving as a key partner with senior leadership
  • Stay Ahead of Emerging Trends: Research and adopt cutting-edge technologies, best practices, and frameworks that promote efficiency and innovation across the engineering org
  • Scale with Sound Architecture: Facilitate technical decision-making across teams to ensure solutions are robust, scalable, and mindful of short- and long-term risks
  • Streamline & Innovate: Work with product and engineering teams to automate processes, bolster service quality, and maintain a commitment to responsible development practices
  • Champion Cross-Functional Alignment: Collaborate closely with fellow engineering leaders to advocate and evangelize a cohesive technical vision that advances our shared business objectives
  • Communicate Impact & Results: Partner with stakeholders to ensure technical solutions align with overarching goals, effectively conveying how engineering efforts drive business value

Requirements:

  • Platform & DevOps Expertise: 10+ years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated success building and operating developer platforms and/or cloud infrastructures. Specific experience with either observability, infrastructure as code, or FinOps is highly desirable
  • Management Experience: A highly technical, hands-on technical leader and an effective people manager with 6+ years of experience directly leading geographically distributed teams and staff-level engineers.
  • Hands-On Knowledge: Familiar with modern DevOps toolchains (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Visionary: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to set long-term technical visions and strategies that inspire the team.
  • Customer Centric: Exceptional focus on customers by building infrastructure products that are stable and reliable.
  • Collaborative Communicator: Skilled at building trust across teams, with the ability to balance technical trade-offs and business priorities.
  • Data-Driven: Comfortable using metrics to inform decision-making and optimize systems.

Compensation: The base pay range for this position is $167,000-$252,000 annually; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Bonuses and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of benefits. Base pay is based on market location. Minimum wage for the position will always be met.
