Tool Kit Essentials for a First Time Home Buyer
After closing on their first home, I received a text asking me what are some of the necessary tools to own as a home owner. This got me thinking that it took me years of field work and completing jobs for clients to build my own tool inventory. What if I could help my clients get started in the right direction by using that knowledge and creating the perfect first time home owner tool kit?
If you're preparing a tool bag for home maintenance on your new house, it's important to have the right tools on hand! Once you are comfortable with these tools and need to step up your DIY game a notch, power tools are the next step. But be careful, this can become an addiction!
Choose The Right Bag
Opt for a durable, medium-sized tool bag that’s easy to carry and has enough pockets for organization. I prefer the bags with solid sides and open in the middle, often called a tool tote. This allows easy access and organization. Keeping your bag organized and in an easily accessible place will save you time and prevent you from buying duplicate tools and hardware.
Basic Hand Tools: These are essential for most any project around the house
Hammer: A standard 16oz claw hammer works for most general tasks.
Screwdrivers: Include a variety of sizes, both flathead and phillips. A screwdriver set with interchangeable bits can save space.
Pliers: A pair of standard pliers and needle nose pliers for more delicate work.
Adjustable Wrench: For turning nuts and bolts of varying sizes.
Tape Measure: A 25-foot tape measure should be more than sufficient.
Utility Knife: Preferably one with disposable blades.
Level: A small, 12 inch level will help with hanging pictures or installing shelves.
