About Jonathan
"Jonathan Mellon specializes in selling real estate in the historic neighborhoods of NYC; from the Upper West Side to the Brooklyn Brownstone belt, as well as finding properties in need of renovation citywide. His 10-plus years of personal experience buying/renovating/selling apartments in NYC, Washington, DC and Savannah, Georgia is complemented by his more than 15-year career in municipal government working in the fields of city planning, historic preservation and architecture. This experience greatly fueled his knowledge of zoning/development rules and regulations, proposed plans and initiatives, NYC Landmarks Commission policies and NYC Department of Buildings guidelines that dictate what can be done when renovating/combining units. Jonathan offers his valuable insight to give buyers and sellers a clearer picture of the value, opportunities and limitations that properties and neighborhoods present. Jonathan believes that being informed is the key to a successful transaction.
For the seller, understanding the existing market conditions will allow for avoiding the pitfalls of over/under pricing a listing. For the buyer, knowing the building and area will help them focus less on buying an apartment for its view, for example, and be more cognizant of future potential. ""That view can be destroyed if a buyer dives in, then later learns that the city is rezoning the neighborhood. Future construction will ultimately not only block that view, but will impact the apartment's value as well.""
A Brooklyn native born and raised in Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill, Jonathan attended Brooklyn Friends School then completed his undergraduate degree in American History at Oberlin College. He also completed a Master's degree in Historic Preservation at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Since graduating from college, he has lived in the Columbia Street Waterfront District, Murray Hill, Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn, as well as the Kalorama section of Washington, DC. Jonathan now happily lives in Clinton Hill."
