About David
The logo of David Shotwell

David is a skilled listing agent who helps his sellers understand how to use the current market conditions to achieve the best sales price in the shortest amount of time.  He also has an expertise in assisting out of town sellers, and estate sales providing them with white glove service, as well as tenant occupied properties, and cooperatives (coops) and condominiums (condos).

With buyers, David uses a consultative approach to fully understand what his clients are looking for and matches that with the best properties for sale - including any off-market homes.

David’s clients have consistently raved about his responsiveness, market knowledge, friendly approach, and fierce advocacy their behalf.

David works all kinds of clients, from first-time buyers and sellers to seasoned investors, with a special focus on livable and walkable neighborhoods, and empty nesters as well as estates.

Before he began his career real estate, David worked at AARP for 13 years, where he led national efforts to promote livable communities, including walkable neighborhoods, accessible housing, access to transportation options, smart growth, and mixed-use development. He is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), an Accredited New Urbanist from the School of Architecture at the University of Miami, and a member of The Congress for New Urbanism (CNU).

David holds the Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR), Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES), and At Home With Diversity (AHWD) designations and has completed graduate coursework in real estate as a Graduate, Realtor Institute (GRI). David is also a member of the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance.

He has also been quoted in numerous leading publications including Washingtonian magazine, The Washington Post, Amtrak's Arrive magazine and has been seen on NBC4 News.

David takes his love of the city and its surrounding neighborhoods beyond buying and selling — since moving D.C. in 1998, he has lived Shaw; Logan Circle; U Street; Woodley Park; Old Town, Alexandria; and Del Ray. He and his husband currently live in DC's Bloomingdale neighborhood. David is hooked on real estate shows and blogs, but he isn’t always thinking about home. An avid traveler, David has visited all seven continents including, most recently, Antarctica.

David is licensed to sell real estate in the District of Columbia (DC), Virginia (VA) and Maryland (MD).

What David's Clients are saying:

"I can’t recommend David Shotwell highly enough – besides his awesome personality, he brings great knowledge of the Washington D.C. market, 24/7 responsiveness, an excellent team of people with him. With selling, he helped me stage my place and came up with an excellent and comprehensive “out of the gate” strategy that helped me elicit multiple offers and close quickly. With buying, he was on top of new listings, some even before they hit the market, and provided options and insights – plus lots of patience – which helped me find my new home."
- Dave, Observatory Circle (seller) and Columbia Heights (buyer)

“I have used David Shotwell in my last two real estate transactions, the first for the sale of an attached row home in Columbia Heights, and the second, a condo in Dupont Circle. In both instances David was very knowledgeable of the local market as well as my specific properties versus the comparable inventory. This allowed us to develop an appropriate pricing strategy which David was extremely knowledgeable in both explaining and executing. In both instances we received multiple offers over the asking price and both transactions were closed short order with minimal stress my part. His team was more than competent in the coordination of the closing process, again eliminating for stress me. I would definitely recommend David and his team for any real estate transaction. And now that I have sold my two places, I will using him again shortly to purchase my next home.”
- Frank, Dupont Circle (seller) and Columbia Heights (seller)

"As a first-time buyer, I was looking an agent the industry intelligence, appreciation of my best interests and patience to walk me through the process from start to finish – and David encompassed all of that and more.

Anyone will realize after chatting with him for a couple of minutes that David’s charm stems from a genuine desire to make sure that his client is happy - and that is hugely important when making this kind of milestone decision. I can't imagine going through the buying process without an agent like David who pointed out new opportunities, calmly explained lengthy loan documents, patiently listened to my concerns and provided thoughtful, intelligent and actionable feedback.

My buying process was well-planned, swift and without stress, primarily due David’s diligent follow-up with all parties, his consideration of my needs and concerns, and his funny and lighthearted company throughout the entire process. Point being, David is someone you want on your side when buying a home. Whether it is your first or your tenth, he is someone who you trust to get the job done (and to make you laugh a couple of times along the way).  I'm extremely happy with my experience."
- Matt, Logan Circle (buyer)

"David Shotwell was totally outstanding and a complete professional. As empty nesters, it had been a while since we had bought or sold a home. He worked us through the entire process of selecting the right home for our needs, guiding us through the complex process of offers and counteroffers, to the final procedure of closing the deal. We are very happy clients.
We would recommend David to anyone who needs a person to make it happen and yet be a person who is also very easy to work with while finding a home."
- Julie & Rob, Alexandria (buyers)
